I first started shooting film last year, after purchasing an OM10 on impulse from my local camera shop. I had always loved photographs, and the power I felt from images I saw, but often put on a pedestal the idea I could create images like those. After quickly becoming obsessed with film, I delved into it headfirst, shooting pictures of friends, bands; anyone I could.
After gaining some confidence with film I started playing with light, different film stocks (I used Fuji Superia 400 for my first few months, then moved onto Portra 400), and pushing and pulling film, as well as different cameras and lenses. Using an LED light, some carrier bags as gels, and some very patient and talented friends I took some photos I was happy with and found a new passion. The nature of shooting people and portraits was something I could never have seen myself doing as I suffer with social anxiety and depression, however this means of understanding people and their emotions better – as well as finding something I actually feel I can do to some degree – has been an incredible form of therapy.
